history:
Xavier was not the first born in the Merit family. On the day of his birth he already had an older sister. She was a year old when Xavier came into her life and at first the two were practically inseparable. It soon became clear, however, that Xavier was very different from the rest of his family. It wasn't the fact that things around him just seemed to go his way, because they were already certain that like his mother, Xavier was going to be a wizard. Instead it was the fact that his brain just seemed to do more than it should. He was reading and solving simple problems at a young age when his parents finally decided to get him to a doctor. He was already taking things his sister had learned and putting them to use in his own little life. When his sister reached school age they caught him with her homework after having taken it directly from Teresa's bag. Surprisingly it wasn't the stealing that alarmed them but the fact that a child would want to or be able to learn something higher than what they were supposed to have developed.
School wasn't much of a challenge for Xavier. After the first grade the teachers decided to challenge him a bit more and give him a syllabus of sorts. That proved to be a horrible idea because Xavier had completed the entire thing in no time. It was from that moment that he began learning things from the next grade up every year. But even this was moving slowly and Xavier began to find his own ways to develop his mind.
The family had another addition at this point. It turned out that Xavier was just a little too different for the Merit's taste and when said boy was three they welcomed another bouncing baby boy into the family. As time progressed it was a relief to most of the household that David was more like them than Xavier was. Xavier started to feel more and more out of place as the years went on and while he told himself that was just fine, he was a little upset that his parents weren't these great thinkers like he was. It was never about him becoming more like his family, but rather he wanted them to be like him.
When he was seven his father developed a drinking problem and his mother became very religious, which was quite awkward because she mixed the names Merlin and Jesus up quite frequently. She insisted that she was going to save his father's soul and make him stop drinking. What resulted was a lot of arguments. No one was ever physically abused and Xavier thinks that his siblings have had no adverse effects. But it was during this time that he developed a fear of people who argue. It made him uncomfortable. He couldn't understand why they were arguing, human interaction being one of the few things he did not excel in. Unfortunately, this pattern continued throughout Xavier's life.
By the time Xavier was eleven he was getting ready to enter his freshman year of secondary school, having successfully convinced the teachers that his mind needed more learning material. But that plan was thrown out the window when he received his letter to Hogwarts. His mother and older sister accompanied him to Diagon Alley where he began the process of getting ready for the magic school. The idea of a magic school, though he had known about it for quite some time with his mother's history and his sister's acceptance, still boggled him just a little. He decided that there had to be a scientific explanation for magic and was determined to find it.
At the sorting ceremony he was placed in Ravenclaw, a different house from his older sister who had been sorted the previous year into Hufflepuff. That made perfect sense to Xavier as his sister preferred fashion to knowledge and he didn't consider her particularly intelligent. Another quick, yet unsurprising to Xavier, discovery proved that the young man's mind was able to process this magic as well as his muggle learning. The doctors from earlier in his life had suggested that his memory was eidetic, which allowed him to absorb more information because he could recall just about everything he'd seen perfectly.
After much consideration, they began giving him the homework for the second years as well as the current ones that he was taking as a first year. Luckily all of his teachers would be the same because the first two years, he had been told, were for taking what were known as the core classes – classes that all students their age had to take. Not only was he on time with his lessons but he finished them perfectly. The year afterward he was moved straight to his third year.
Now he was in the same class (though still different house) than his sister, which he thought she resented a little but to tell the truth he could never really tell. In addition to his Hogwarts work, he decided that he wanted a thorough knowledge of the muggle world as well. He wanted to study the same thing that muggles his age would be learning, only he wanted to pick up at the high school level where he left off. He began studying both areas with ease though it left little time for social activities. That was fine because Xavier preferred to avoid those events at all cost if it could be helped. He wanted to socialize with people who were more like him, but he could never seem to find anyone that fit his standards. He had a few people he called friends but he wasn't quite sure that that was what they really were. He had trouble reading their sarcasm and he always went back to learning if possible.
This has continued on over the years. He has now made it to his seventh year (at sixteen years old because the teachers were hesitant to move him up any further) and has a muggle high school diploma. He would rather not wait until after Hogwarts to start collage but he doesn't think that can be avoided. So he has been sticking it out and focusing on his seventh year and getting a head start on collage by researching texts that he has felt are most applicable to muggle advanced degrees.- - - - - - -
